If you suspect TMJ pain, schedule an appointment with our East Lansing, Michigan, office today.

What is TMJ disorder?

Everyone has TMJs, or temporomandibular joints, on either side of the face, which connect the lower jaw to the skull. While you may not be aware of it, you use your TMJs numerous times a day as you chew, smile, talk, and yawn. While the TMJs allow for the fluid and smooth movement of the jaw, they can become inflamed or strained, leading to a condition known as temporomandibular joint disorder.

TMJ disorders affect individuals differently, but common symptoms include:

  • Earaches or ringing in the ears (tinnitus)
  • Headaches
  • Jaw pain, especially in the morning
  • Clicks and pops when using your jaws
  • Difficulty opening and closing the jaws (locked jaws)

The discomfort of TMJ pain varies. For some, the discomfort is mild and intermittent. For others, it’s relentless pain that affects everyday life. The good news is that we can provide relief.

How is TMJ pain treated?

Because it can persist in several ways, we take a personalized approach to treatment. During your visit, we’ll examine your jaw movement and signs of soreness. Imaging may be needed to determine the presence of structural abnormalities in the jaw joints and surrounding musculature.

Based on your diagnosis, we may suggest a custom nightguard for mild to moderate cases of teeth grinding (bruxism). A nightguard acts as a cushion for your teeth, protecting them from the effects of grinding and alleviating strain on your jaw joints. In addition to using a nightguard, we may recommend lifestyle changes, such as jaw exercises, applying cold compresses, and following a soft diet.

Depending on the reason for your dental issue, we may suggest orthodontic treatment to correct the alignment of your bite. Surgical interventions are only considered if conservative methods fail to provide the required relief.

What are the benefits of TMJ pain treatment?

Here are the benefits you can look forward to with TMD treatment:

  • Alleviate discomfort: We use our jaws daily for eating, smiling, and talking. Given this, discomfort with TMJ pain can take a toll on your everyday life. However, TMJ pain treatment relieves pain so you no longer have to live with headaches, jaw pain, and other aches.
  • Enhanced jaw function: TMJ pain can make speaking and eating uncomfortable and even painful. Many people with TMJ pain avoid conversations and eating chewy or hard foods. Treatment can help you enjoy meals and speaking again without discomfort.
  • Improved sleep quality: You and your bed partner can enjoy restful nights without the clenching or grinding noises that can disrupt sleep.
  • Enhanced quality of life: You can enjoy life again without discomfort holding you back.
